10 habits that will change your life for better

Hi guys,

Today I would like to talk about some habits, that have great power to make our life easier and more productive. I’ve started incorporating them into my daily routine and although many of them aren’t my everyday thing yet, I can already see how better my day is when I do this easy (as we could think) activities.

So without further explanations, let’s move to all those life-changing habits.

Get up early

This is the one I am struggling with the most. Especially, since I had my son (ok, he is just an excuse, I had a problem with this before he was born too).

However, every day, when I manage to get up before him, I have some time for myself, I can get ahead with my tasks (at least these requiring me to focus). Having this one or two hours each day, when everyone is asleep makes a lot of the difference.

Of course, I could tell you to wake up at any ‘optimal’ time, but such perfect time does not exist. I’ve read a lot of blog posts and articles about the power of getting up at 6 am, or 5 am. Some even swear to everything that is important to them that 4 am is the time when you should get up and start your day.

Although I believe them, I still don’t agree with them. I don’t think getting up at 4 am would do any good for a person, who let’s say finished their shift just two hours before. But the fact is, that if you’ll get up earlier before your normal schedule, it will definitely help. At least if you won’t spend this time scrolling through your social media.

Open all windows at your home as soon as you wake up

This seems to be so random and not important thing, that I wouldn’t bother to do this. I’ve read about this so many time before, but I have never seen any purpose of it. Of course, I did open them at some point during the day but didn’t see why would I open them as a first thing after waking up.

Well, when I started to follow it, I had to admit it has changed my life. First of all, my home is fresh and airy before I am done with making breakfast. That makes me more likely to do some work when I am ready to start getting my things done.

Don’t make your bed to soon

This can seem like a nightmare for those, who like me were growing up with mums who really paid attention to it. For me, there was no way to leave my bed unmade for longer than 10 minutes since I woke up.

But in reality, there is very good reason to leave making your bed till a bit later or even not doing it at all. Leaving it uncovered (but not messy), for some time with an open window, will help you to have a good night sleep in fresh bedding.

Have a nutritious breakfast

This one never had to be explained to me. But anyway I was always eating very bad breakfast or haven’t got any at all. I’ve started working on the quality of the first meal in the day, I started having much more energy than I used to.

If you are a coffee drinker, it might be even more beneficial to you, as in my example, breakfast helped me not crush as quickly as I used to.

Get at least a bit of exercise

This is quite obvious. In polish (I am not sure about English) we have a saying: “in the healthy body healthy soul”. Keeping yourself in good condition help to reduce stress and pain associated with prolonged sitting or standing.

And the good news is, that you don’t need to spend money on expensive equipment or gym ticket. Just a bit stretching and walk or run in the fresh air will do the thing. And you’ll not even realise when you’ll start loving it.

I can’t say I am running regularly, as not always I have someone to leave my son with. But I am able to go for a walk almost every day. It is good for my son too 🙂

Review your plan

This is the thing, I am most guilty of. I have my to-do list prepared and it is just waiting for me in my bullet journal, but when I’ll get ready, I just keep getting my tasks from my memory.

Reviewing your to-do list after every task will help you to decide which task is the best to do next (if you haven’t written them in the order) and at the same time, you’ll not forget about anything.

See what can you do, before the real day starts

Before I will talk about the importance of this habit, let me explain what do I mean by real day. This is quite connected to the first point, where I told you about getting up earlier. For the purpose of this post, the real day will mean the time before your normal wake up time.

Why is this one so important to me? As for the most part of the day my son is following my each and every step, he has to try doing everything I do and basically he is in the age of being interested in everything, I have to have my eyes all around my head. That makes it impossible to do anything what requires me to focus (first of all, my son would be climbing one any way; second of all: if he wouldn’t climb, he would be looking for some way to explore the highest shelves in our house, what could end in taking him to ER after he would have fallen).

So every time, when I manage to wake up before him, I am getting as much of writing posts, recording videos, montaging them, etc as I possibly can. Of course, after having my breakfast. If I think about it, ironing is one of these tasks too. I don’t really understand it, but my son loves every kind of strings, wires and other long objects. As I am ironing, he tries to pull the wire and it is quite stressful not to let him get hot iron on his head.

Clean as you go

I don’t know how it is in your place, but my one has a magic power of getting dirty. You know, I’ve just washed the dishes, after made tea and heated up some food, I turned around and my sink is full of the dishes… AGAIN!

Or I hoover and mop the floors. Meantime my son wakes up I feed him and my floors are all dirty. Just in no time.

For some time I was even wondering if there is a point of trying to keep my place clean. But soon I found a solution (to be honest my mum used to say it to me all the time when I was a kid, I just wouldn’t listen to her). It is just one very powerful sentence: clean as you go. I started with my dishes. Most of the time or make something to eat or drink, I try to wash everything straight away. To help myself with the floors, I bought a small hand hoover and every time my son decides that the best place for his rice is on the floor, I clean it right away.

This way, my home stays relatively clean at all time and I am not getting frustrated all the time.

Stay hydrated

I find it very important too. I have never paid a lot of attention to how much I am drinking. But quite recently I had these horrible headaches, which wouldn’t go. I was stuffing myself with painkillers, I was trying to catch extra naps whenever I could. But nothing helped.

Actually, my mum was the one who suggested that I might be not drinking enough. Well, since I started drinking at least a 1-litre bottle of water or other drink, I seem to have more energy and what is most important, my headaches are completely gone.

Plan your next day

This is very important too. It is very important to prepare your to-do list in the evening before. It will help you stay on the top of your tasks the next day when you wake up early. The trick is, you don’t waste your time on thinking what you have to do, you just pick a task from your list and get it done.

If your planning system is good, you will be also less likely to forget about important things, deadlines, appointments, etc.

And these are all habits I wanted to share with you today. I will be happy to read your recommendations of habits.

But this is it for today’s post. I wish you a very productive day and I’ll see you in my next post.

Ps. I’ve forgotten to press schedule when I finished this post, so we have almost 5 hours delay today. Normally, posts will be live every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11 pm UK time.

Processes in our life?

Hi guys,

Today I would like to tell you about processes. Lately, I have realised that the entire life of each person is made of smaller and bigger processes. We are growing, eating, learning, building new relationships… All of these are some kind of processes. It doesn’t happen within minutes, it can take even a years.

There are also some processes, we don’t have too much to do to change them or decide how they will go (for example, you can’t decide how tall you’ll grow) and the other are highly dependent on our actions. To build good relationship, you need to spend some time with the person, get to know each other. Your time and behaviour during your meetings will determine, if this person will become your friend, your partner or just one of the colleagues.

But what I wanted to focus on today, are processes connected to self development. Here we have a lot of processes going on. First of all, figuring out that you want to change is a process. It doesn’t happen over night (at least not always). There must be some events, making you realise that something is not right; this one thing has to happen to let you know, that this is the time to start all this changes. And finally you are coming to the point that you are starting to incorporate new habits into your life.

Habits are processes itself, but the longer process connected to them is making some activity a habit. This can take as short as a couple of weeks (especially, if we are talking about bad habits we are incorporating, while we are not aware of it) or as long as couple of years. And with the second type, there is one problem. There are very hard on the beginning. You must keep reminding yourself about this new thing you want to do, you have to fight your procrastinating self and finally, you have to be consistent.

I have mentioned in one of my previous post, that having a routine is very important and helpful, however I haven’t mentioned that actual process of building this routine is very hard. You might think: “What is so hard in doing different things than I usually do? Especially, things like drinking the water as a first thing in the morning, or having a good breakfast?”. And I have to agree, it is simple in theory. As soon as you’ll find any small hardship (like I haven’t prepared my water the day before or I need to go to the shop and buy fresh bread), you are very likely to give up for the day. You might think something like: “Ok. Today, I’m going to leave it, I will come back to it tomorrow, it is just one day…”. But in reality, this one day might change everything. Next day you will become less willing to do it, after less willing to even thing about it and try to produce some kind of excuse, and finally you will forget about this great habit you wanted to have.

So building a new routine or incorporating new habits are very complicated processes. There is constant war between doing well and failing, but after retrying it again and again, we will succeed. This trigger another process, which is a process of building self-confidence. We will have ups and downs, but each time we are trying again, we are getting this feeling, that this time it will work, I can do it!

And this leads me to a conclusion. We need to be aware in which processes we are involved, as all of them are cross connected. They influence our life, and might have a great impact on our life, but they might be also destructive. For each process you have to sacrifice accurate amount of energy, otherwise you might become too overwhelmed or too lazy to get it to the end. And this unfinished process might have an impact on your life, even if it will only decrease your self-esteem.

I am going to leave you with this thought. I hope you like this post and I will be glad to read your opinion on this topic in the comment section.

For now, I wish you a very productive day and I’ll see you in my next post.

Forbidden friut tastes the best

Hi guys,

Today is a third day since I have returned to work. And I have mixed feelings about it. First of all, I hate being out of work doing nothing. I know that health is the most important (that is the reason, why I haven’t do anything; usually, I tend to break doctor’s rules). However, last few days, my head felt very heavy, eventhough I slept much more than usually. And I felt generally tired. As my employer believed me that I was unable to work (he visited me in hospital), he did not need to see my doctor’s leave and as I feel much better than yesterday, I’ve decided to forget that I can stay at home till end of the week.

What I’ve realised recently, staying at home on doctor’s leave makes me feel much more unwell, than I actually am. Maybe it is just a think, that I sleep a lot, but simply, I don’t like it. I feel like I am not able to do anything. Like nothing has sense. What I have learnt, returning to work makes me feel better (any way, my boss doesn’t let me do too hard work straight after returning back; this actually cause my mixed feelings).

There is one saying in polish (and I am not sure, if it exists only in polish language; you can let me know in comment section, if in your country you have it too), which goes: “Forbidden fruit tastes the best”. That means that if you shouldn’t be doing something, you will do it. Just because it is forbidden. I can’t explain, why it happens this way, but when I think about it closely, it really does happen to me quite often.

Since I was a child, I remember that things, my parents asked me not to do, always seemed more attractive. I think,6 it was some kind of adrenaline. You know, this voice in my head: “What if I will get caught?”. Or maybe it was just a need of independence? Whatever it was, it was worthed breaking rules. This feeling, that: “Hey! I did it and I am still ok!”.

However, things being forbidden very often are some kind of a hazard for our health or safety. Propably this is a reason, why we are not supposed to do them. Similar is with my work.

I have to admit that I like my job in general. But there are some aspects of it making me not want to go there. Every here and then I just pray for few days off. A little time to rest. However, any time I am on a doctor leave, I can’t wait to go to work. There is some force out there pushing me and staying at home makes me feel worse. And this time I’ve started wondering, why this is happening. Does it mean that I am a workaholic? Or maybe it is kind of my forbidden fruit?

I came to a conclusion, that it must be the second one. This kind of thing, when I don’t really want to do something and I need a break, but because it is a forced break, I am getting frustrated about it. Does it sound weird? For me it does, eventhough I am guilty of it. And as I am thinking about it more, I am realising that this is not a first time when I am doing it.

Ok, but why am I actually thinking about it? It is just happening, isn’t it? Well, I believe that if we want to take real control over our life, we need to understand what causes our behaviours. As long as we are not aware of them, we can’t really prevent them. And on the other side, if there is some behaviour, we want to incorporate in our life more, we should determine what needs to happen to make us behave this particular way.

And I believe that self-awareness is a neccessary tool in self-development. How can you change something, if you don’t know what is going on? It is like if you would go to doctor with a headache and he would give you random medicines without figuring out what is the problem. This would be weird, wouldn’t it?

That’s the reason why I think, that first thing to sort any problem, is to figure out what causes it. If you can prevent it, you can stop this problem to occur again. Or, if it is about behaviours, better understanding of yourself will improve the control you have over your emotions and will help you to make more reasonable decisions in the future and give you chance to think them through before, instead of acting afected by emotions.

And with this thought, I am going to end this post. Have a productive day and I’ll see you in my next post.

My dreams and plan how to make them happen

Hi guys,

It’s just happening! All my goals (without those too personal, of course) and everything what I am going to do to actually achieve them in one place! This is one of my dreams becoming reality.

So maybe short explanation: why on the internet? why not in any kind of notebook, file on my computer or anything like that, what I can keep for my personal use only? Answer for those question is very simple: because I need motivation. Even for such simple thing like tracking my goals progress. I use to have a lot of tries to have them written anywhere and any time I do something, I can just come back to them and mark what have been done. I’ve really tried. But always something happened. I’ve left my notebook in random place (like my friend’s home) and all my goals stayed there for quite long time. I had an excel file, but when my computer died, my file was gone as well.

So maybe all that list weren’t necessary? Well, they were. At least for me. It’s very motivating, when you have every goal, dream and habit you want to implement into your life in one place. That gives you some kind of peace of mind and let some thoughts like: “Ok, there is ton of work to be done, but I’ve done this, so I am one step closer” come into your mind. This is some kind of motivation on it’s own. You see how every activity you do, brings you closer to become who you are.

Ok, I’ve explained, I hope. And I don’t want to make my first post too long, so let’s talk about my actual goals. Most of them require long time to actually achieve them, but no mater what result it would be, I think it is worth trying.
1. Design my own website.

So this is kind of goals which doesn’t want to leave me, no matter what I do. I already have some clue about topic and form of my website, where I am going to upload reviews of book (you don’t know yet, but reading is my passion). But before I’ll start I need to learn some stuff and improve the other. Here is a short list:

  • learn HTML and CSS (as these are the programming languages I am going to use, at least in the beginning)
  • code my website
  • improve my English skills (as you could already realize, I have a lot to do about this)
  • prepare content (just read books and keep writing reviews – what is actually great, as same time I am going to improve my English skills – everyone wins).

2. Release my own app.

This is something what appeared in my head not too long ago, when I realized that most of apps I am using, are not good enough. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t thing they are bad. A lot of them are just great. The only thing is, that I would add some features, which I would use or just remove some which I don’t need. So I thought: “Daria, why cannot you just make your own one?”.

But for now, I am going to leave details about this, as first I will try to work on my website. When it will be launched, I’ll start going into my own app 😉 One thing at the time 😉

3. Learn Arabic language.

This is another dream of those never going away from my head. It’s hard to explain it, but Arabic language always attracted me. Even if I hadn’t had too much contact with this language, I think the way it sounds is beautiful.

4. Become more active.

This is something connected with well-being. All my previous goals require from me huge amount of time spent in sitting position. Well, let say I wouldn’t like to wake up one day realizing that I am not able to walk for longer than 15 minutes without being breathless. It would be scary for me. So I decided some jogging or bike every day won’t harm me, will it?

5. Post every day on this blog.

This is idea of having this blog. As to write anything here, I have to do something to have to write about (what means: get closer to make my dreams become a reality).

I’ve gave myself a deadline, so I would like, that every day at 11 pm (according to London’s time and of course except today, which appeared much earlier) I will upload new post. So it will give me some time after my work, to do anything I can write about.

I would like to make this blog look more my way. But as this is my first blog in my life, I just need to look little bit deeper into it. Tomorrow I’ll try to take some shots and at least use my own pictures instead of those, I am using at the moment.

Those are my five main goals at the moment. I have some more, but I need to to be realist: with my university starting after around 1 month and my work, I won’t have as much time as I wish I had. Every goal, which will be achieved or activity which will become my habit will be replaced with next one.

I hope you like this post. Please leave any suggestion or opinion in comment below. And I’ll see you tomorrow in next post.

Daria.

P.S. Today I’ve done some activities, which made me a little closer, but I’ve decided that my tracking I’ll start tomorrow, as this post became quite long already. I realized, that I forgot about one of the most important habit I want to implement into my life which is to make plans for the next day. So I’ve done one for tomorrow 😉

Have a nice evening 🙂
